Zumba is one of the most fun ways of staying fit as it is one of the most effective cardio exercises. It has started gaining immense popularity in many gym and dance studios. If you have recently obtained a Zumba instructor certification and want to start teaching in your studio, you are in for an exciting adventure. Whether you have instructed a dance class before or not, teaching your first Zumba class can feel overwhelmed. These four tips will help you in becoming better prepared for you first class:

1. Do Some Practice

It is normal to feel nervous before your first class. The best way to overcome the nerves is by doing some practice. Practice teaching in front of the mirror, your friends or family members to determine if you need to make any changes in your routine. You can even video tape yourself and watch later to figure out what needs to be changed in the lesson. Go through the entire lesson you are planning for the class and ensure that the music transition from one song to another is smooth.

2. Set the Right Beat

Select the best Zumba songs to make your class fun. This might seem easy but is actually rather challenging. There are hundreds of great songs which makes it hard to pick a few for your class. However, opt for the ones you love and think can give a good workout for your class. It is important that you know all the songs well and practice as much as possible to keep yourself well prepared. Only when you feel comfortable performing each step can you make your students comfortable. You can even ask your students for song suggestions at the end of the class to add in the next lesson.

3. Dress the Part

Choose a fun but comfortable outfit. You can easily find clothes that are especially designed for Zumba workouts but they can get expensive. Make sure you pick an outfit in which you can comfortably move about and is made up of light fabric. Shoes are a very important part of the outfit. Invest in some good workout shoes that can effectively support the dance moves. Cross trainers or dance sneakers are great options. Keep a water bottle with you and a towel as well. When you are properly prepared and appropriately dressed for a good workout, your students will follow your example.

4. Stay Confident

You love to dance and you are a certified Zumba instructor, on your way to instruct your first class. You already have the passion, talent and expertise to teach which should add to your confidence. Remind yourself that you already have what it takes and teaching new students would be a breeze. Make sure you make all of your students welcomed and give some extra help to anyone lagging behind. Keep the students engaged and give out general suggestions, advice and compliments to boost their confidence. Ensure you also focus on the students in the back row so they don’t feel left out.

Most importantly, relax and have fun! Your confidence and positive attitude will create a fun environment for your students which will help them in learning more. Encourage them to help one another and have a good time. This will help you and your students to have great time learning and enjoying in the Zumba class.
